It goes junior because global reserve sucks. I love WB flying but chose NB because commuting to the coasts on global reserve would ruin me and my family.

And 4- seat locks. If you get a 73 or 320 or 756 and hate it, you can be in something new 4 months later. Take WB straight away and you’re stuck for 2 years unless you bid for captain or get lucky and a new base comes along.

there are a lot of reasons that have been previously mentioned. I have warned more than a few new hire friends against bidding for the wide body. However coming from the military, wide body flying is what they said they were used to and wanted the long haul flying. All of them have come back and said they wish they had taken my advice.

What is it about commuting to global reserve that makes it worse than commuting to regular reserve? I understand the ability to have some of your days off moved, which is obviously a big deal, but is there anything else specifically?

You are able to bid Left Seat once your probation is over (and some other caveats).
You are seat locked with regards to bidding into another aircraft that pays same or less.
Right seat to Left seat pays more.
oh, and there is also something about new bases being opened that does away with certain seat locks.
That being written- any newhire who gets a 78/77 FO slot in BI can expect to be there until the 2 yr time frame expires UNLESS they consider TPA as a “new base” once it’s allowed to be a satellite base of MCO- with a new TA.
Also have to wonder if we won’t be looking at PHX or BOS by the end of next year…

I was 756 EWR back in 2015 when things were a little slower but I would assume it was equivalent to what 777 787 now. There are pluses to it such as most flights left at night so commuting to an actual flying assignment was easier. Problem I ran into was just the lack up trips available to pick up, that along with being junior, meant A LOT more nights at the crash pad/ hotel than my 737 a320 friends. The crash pad was filled with 756 guys, while the 737 guys were out flying in hotel rooms bought by the company. Also yes your days can get moved around a high can be rough on the family life. Also, the 6 days that are immovable by the company must be 6 days in a row. So while you do get one nice stretch of days off, the rest of the time expect something like 5 on 2 off.

Folks aren’t making career decisions with a contract in mind when it comes to legacies.
You act as if United is on the level of ACMI and regional carriers when it comes to making career decisions based on contracts….. You also act as if United terrible…. If it’s that horrible, why did you choose to come or stay here in the first place?
Look here, United is far from perfect, but let’s not act as if AA or DL don’t have their issues either…. Folks are going to choose the carriers that best fit their lifestyle at the end of the day at this point.
