People have all sorts of schemes. Many junior ER A guys have been doing some whacky things on the pickup board the last couple years which I can never seem to figure out. More power to them. If it makes their QOL of better within the bounds of the contract have at it. That’s the great thing about this job, a niche for everyone.

My scheme is extremely simple. Live in base, bid reserve with strategic SC YSing, try to fly as little as possible and be perfectly content with RG and hopefully 6 SCCs on top of it as icing on the cake. I also have a blanket GS in to see if anything comes down the pipe (hasn’t for a year).

Agree 1000%. Try and change the contract if you want but I don’t understand the hate for people exercising their contractual rights, no matter how someone else sees it.

This strategy provides the best QOL for me. I live at the base and enjoy RES more than REG. On average RES month, I am away from home about 5-7 nights a month blocking 30-40 hours, if that.

yesh to me the days away (I know I know unused LC days are not “days off”) is the most impotent factor to me. Whatever strategy has me gone the least amount of days a month at 75ish hours pay is what I want. An X day and an unused LC are effectively the same for me, at least right now with three young kids.

Huh? How did you get that from what I posted?

I agree on LC; it's virtually a Day off for me as well. The only time its more of a nuisance is when we are converted to SC.

It seemed you were sarcastically suggesting that accepting a WS should not be done without first checking reserve coverage.

If you're not being sarcastic, I apologize... I misread your tone. I'll lay off the caffiene.

As a local but still 2 hour drive guy, if i was to call in Non Contatable right at SC notification and then call back in "contactable" say 5 or 10 minutes before SC start would I then revert to the normal SC call out time? Essentially could I save myself from being given a trip inide of the two hours from the time of SC notifcation to the actual start?

Correct. but being right at the defined NC 2-hour drive-time, if you do invoke NC, I would call/check iCrew schedule 0:01 minute into SC, since you would be expected to be at the airport right at that 2-hour point if there was a trip assigned at exactly the wrong moment (the chances of that are super low, but not zero). If no trip present when you call/check iCrew, you revert to "promptly available" with the undefined callout time, and would then also require a phone call for any assignment.

that’s pretty much my reserve strategy too. Would rather be home. Some people do whacky things in my eyes, but again, each their own. More power to them but if something has the ability to go out as a GS, you hate to see someone WS or YS it but yeah there are reasons for it, sure.. fly least amount possible and wait for premium to call is IMO the best way to value your time 90% of the time
