I seriously would like two things that would make ShortCall much better.
1- a Motocross track within 2 hours of EWR/LGA/JFK that is open every day (in season anyways)
2-A secure enough company parking lot that I wouldn't be afraid of my bikes being stolen out of a locked windowless van.
2B-I would need a new van to go practice on shortcall with.

I drive a little over 4 now, but have a line. Upgrading to junior A next month, so will be driving on reserve for a while.
I found a city about 1:45 from base that has a movie theatre, gym, golf course, bowling alley, library, mall and random other places to hang out for the day.

Would anyone care to share their experiences living > 2 hours driving distance from base and bidding reserve? I’m around 50% category. On SC, just drive within 2 hours and hang out somewhere? That the technique? Besides that, on LC I’m assuming you’d just hang out at home, pursue hobbies etc. Any big picture considerations I’m missing? Thanks

The only time I heard two hour response mentioned for SC was during indoc and crew resources was giving their presentation. They said they PLAN 2 hours for most bases and 2.5 in NY/LAX and kept calling it 2 hour callout after.
I'm within range, but know a bunch in my area over two. In less then ideal weather, or when known road issues are going on, a few captains and FOs have been spotted at my local Starbucks, library, or Costco killing some time. All in how you want to play the game. Biggest rule, if you break the spirit of the rule, don't get caught.

I look at it this way.. In NYC I cover three airports. If I can make it to the closest (EWR) in 2-2.5 ish hours in normal traffic (which I define as NOT rush hour) and I have 1500-0000 SC, and they call me at 1510 to go to JFK, they just added significant mileage, but TWO bridges (Outerbridger or Goethals, and Verazzano) plus miles of Belt Parkway which can be a parking lot at that time. But I still could have made EWR in the alloted time with normal traffic. I get to JFK when I get to JFK.

The only place 2 hours is mentioned is 22.S.7.b.exception, where you can be "non contactable" for the first two hours of SC, but are expected to be able report immediately at the end of the 2 hours. This is primarily intended for commuters.
If it actually was defined, the company would have to enforce and discipline it. Neither side wants that.
Do not get in an accident. Do not get a speeding ticket. Get there "as quickly as you safely can". But also don't screw the rest of us over and be out of position, or report 3-4 hours later.

If CS said that, they were lying. There is not a defined time for SC response. Period. The PWA defines SC as being "promptly available". Depending on traffic, weather, and other factors, promptly available may easily be excess of 2 hours. In addition, for co-terminal domiciles, you need only be promptly available to the closest airport.

I think he said that’s the number they PLAN for. I don’t equate that as saying they required the pilot to report in 2 or 2.5 hours as applicable. So they probably weren’t lying (this time

Which is BS.

Agreed that SC report isn’t defined in our PWA…let’s keep it that way.
Just as an FYI (because knowing is half the battle) in the Flight Attendant work rules document, they spell out 2hrs to report for their A days (equivalent to our SC), but spell out 3hrs for NYC…can’t remember what it said about LAX.
