Juneau is named after gold prospector Joe Juneau, though the place was for a time called Rockwell and then Harrisburg (after Juneau's co-prospector, Richard Harris). The Tlingit name of the town is Dzántik'i Héeni ("Base of the Flounder’s River", dzánti ‘flounder’, –kʼi ‘base’, héen ‘river’), and Auke Bay just north of Juneau proper is called Áak'w ("Little lake", áa ‘lake’, -kʼ ‘diminutive’) in Tlingit. The Taku River, just south of Juneau, was named after the cold t'aakh wind, which occasionally blows down from the mountains. I'm going old school, with the Tlingit name: Dzantik'i Heeni. :D those guys really missed the opportunity to dish it back but they're sensitive to people not fearing flying in Alaska. Even one of ours was on their side about it. But the way to handle the marauding Delta pilots on APCF into give it back a little. For instance. 1) Where are you going to fly to Juneau from? Seattle? Is that even a hub for you guys? I hardly notice you when I am there. 2) Wait you have a hub in Lax? I thought we bought that from you? 3) Delta Airlines 4) So how long until you give up this flying to Delta Connection? |

In my 17 years of commercial flying the pilots I've flown with or trained with have come from a widely varied background. From part 91 corporate flying to part135 freight to being an LCA/PCA at a regional. It has been my experience that of those highly skilled aviators I have had the privilege to interact with they DO NOT all share a common background. Being a highly competent pilot does not depend on college degree or not, military training or not, it depends on the individual's aptitude only. I've been impressed and unimpressed by the performance of pilots with both types of backgrounds. Not to diminish someone's monumental achievement of graduating 1st in class at Annapolis but I think it is insulting to everyone else who has passed the DAL interview process to insinuate that he is somehow better than them. The airline will survive without one guy. IMHO. Sorry but that post got under my skin.
I agree it makes zero difference where a guy comes from. I only care if I can get along with him for the trip. There are tools that come from both backgrounds. |

I think it is wrongheaded to engage in a debate about whether military or regional pilots are the better pilots. We all passed the interview and do the work. I do think it is important to point out that I personally was both a regional and a military pilot before Delta and, consequently, better than everybody else here. ; )
