I personally know of about 5 guys that were flagged by the psych eval. 2 of them did not make it through the review process and were told that they would never be Delta pilots. Both pointy nose and both great guys, one a current FO at one of the other 2 of the big 3.

Not trying to scare anyone, buy AKs 95% pass rate is suspect.

To be told by some shrink that you will never be a delta pilot after a career of flying whether it be civil or mil, is downright absurd.

The shrink does not tell you that. They can only recommend yes or no. The final decision, based on everything from the psych test, computer test, and face to face, is decided by a group of pilots. At one time, a no from the shrink was the kiss of death. Now, guys get hired even with the no. That is what the review board is all about.

Why would that be absurd? The quality of "careers" varies. Regionals don't normally have any sort of psych screening. I know of a few guys that were on the "page of shame" at my regional, and could never, ever withstand an interview with a shrink, without having their shoelaces removed, and being placed in a comfortable room, with a coloring book and nice, soft crayons.

As for the military, I would think they have more quality control. I can't speak about how a guy could be fit there, and not fit at Delta, but the job descriptions are different. The psychological makeup to be effective in a single-seat fighter might be different enough from the skillset required to make through a four-day trip without getting stabbed, that one can get legitimately flagged. On rare occasions, some "Viper" guys manage to demonstrates why.

absurd because we`ve been through this before. Not his job. The shrink, during the late 90`s hiring period, thought that he was the final word. He actually told a young man that I know " you don`t have enough time to be hired". That, and a few other things, caused a complete review of his "no" recommendations. Quite a few of the "no" got hired.

Four step day 2 guaranteed-to-pass plan, Elvis style:

1. MMPI - answer randomly. You may pass, and if not, you'll get another chance at the shrink's office to take it - and they'll give you hints on what you need to improve. Plus, it gets you done quicker, which gives you time to touch up your hair and slap on some more BRUT. The receptionist loves that stuff.

2. Prove you don't have a self-confidence problem.
- Shrink: "Tell me a bit about yourself."
- Me: "Well, women want me and men want to be me."

3. Prove you can learn from mistakes.
- Shrink: "How do you deal with failure?"
- Me: "Usually, I laugh at the guy."

4. Prove you're committed to the job.
- Shrink: "Why do you want to fly for Delta?"
- Me: "Well, I thought about being a shrink, but you don't see many men in that line of work."

Done.

See you on property.

Rumor going around my Res unit (mix of heavy and fighters) and Husbands Guard unit (all fighters) is that the fighter guys that are laid back on the ground are "inconsistent" for personality on paper; able to be aggressive in the air but chill at home. The test is all about consistency. So put yourself in one situation (ex: FO on a trip) and answer all the questions with that mind set. Only guy we heard did not get hired has always had the "I am a fighter guy why wouldn't you want me" attitude doubt that changed at the panel.

BTW, a great idea I just heard from another mil new hire. He went to the base shrink and asked if he could take the MMPI just for ha-has. Shrink was happy to do so - gave him something to study - and the new hire got to see the test and get briefed on results by the shrink.

He should be hired on slickness alone.
