Home Based Pilots (Section 15.C)
• Being home-based allows for a pilot that is local to the potential TDY location to bid for the home-based status. This differs in several ways from a voluntary TDY. Home-basing cannot be involuntarily assigned.
• Essentially all you are doing is bidding for a schedule in another domicile. For example: If you live in LGA, but are based in ORD (and unable to hold LGA in the normal vacancy process, or there hasn’t been a recent opportunity for you to bid a vacancy) if offered,
you can bid to be home-based.
• A home-based pilot will post home-based opportunities in concurrence with TDY requests. They must be posted by the 10th, open for 4 days, with results on the 5th day.
• Home-based line awards will be made before TDY awards.
• Home-based pilots will participate in the normal monthly bidding process, using their occupational seniority (as they normally would in their regular domicile), to bid for a monthly schedule in their home-based domicile.
• A home-based pilot will not be considered a TDY, or receive accommodations or paid expenses in accordance with 15.B.3.c
o Should the line awarded to a home-based pilot require that he travel to or from his domicile on a scheduled day off, the Company will provide a hotel room for the night immediately preceding and/or immediately following the assignment. The day on which the pilot travels in accordance with this paragraph will be considered a day off.
• A home-based pilot will be provided A12 travel to and from his home airport (if a commuter)/permanent domicile, to his home-based domicile.
o A home-based pilot can utilize the HIGOA entry in DECS to list for your own Apass travel
• No pilot will be required to travel on flights to/from his home for assigned flying that are scheduled to operate between 2300 and 0600 (pilot’s acclimated time).
Essentially you live in a base but can't hold it with your seniority. The company allows you (if offered) to bid home-based TDY. You DO NOT get any per-diem (unless you fly), you DO NOT get a hotel (as you live there).
You DO get to bid your seniority for monthly bidding.

Very good explanation! I would also like to double underline ONLY if scheduling is offering TDY’s for that month. The the previous post example also uses a pilot who lives in NY TDYing to ORD. The more likely scenario is you finally made it back to your DFW after some length of time. Block hours have been cut in your base and there is now a need for pilots in NY. TDY is offered for a month in NY. You can bid Home Based and if you get it you can bid your seniority in NY and get all the contractual stuff mentioned above.

No, I work on the side for ATP and we get alot of military guys using the gi bill for their ATP and type ratings. I try to keep up on upgrade times and bonus money. These heavy dudes can use 500 hours to count towards the 121 time. So just curious. A Captain i flew with the other day got an email from Airline Apps advertising this new 40K dollar upfront bonus.

Anybody want to speculate one why that extra $20 grand in bonus is being offered to a new hire but not to get a qualified FO from within to upgrade?
