We are short on FO's right now, especially in CLT. The attrition is really picking up, with both FO's and Captains leaving for majors or LCC's. If we are able to fill classes for the next year+, the people hired before the first of the year will be in a great place and will likely spend a very short time on reserve.
In 2014, during the last hiring boon, there were people holding lines within a month of finishing IOE.

Once you hold a line, you can also SAP down to 65 hours (usually 3 four day trips, and maybe 1 more day to make 65), and then pick up additional trips later in the other base. You can then try to swap one of your trips with a trip from the other base. Some guys are based in one city, but half of their trips start in another base.

SAP is schedule adjustment period. A 24 window to swap trips on your awarded round one line. The biggest positive aspect is that you can swap without worrying how staffing levels are for that day. You can drop to a minimum of 65 credit hours for the month. You can tailor your schedule to your needs depending on what's available in the opentime pot.

Let's say that you get a schedule that you don't like. Maybe you are working a holiday and don't want to, or you would rather have weekends off, or are assigned a trip with a Captain that you don't like flying with. At most airlines, you would be stuck flying it, or have very little chance to change your schedule.
With the SAP, you can drop every trip that you don't want and pick up new. You can increase your flying, up to 96 hours. You can decrease your flying down to 65 hours.
With the SAP, there is no reason that any lineholder should ever have to work on Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, or any other day that they don't want to.

Round 2 and reserves work it.
This is one of the reasons that seniority is important, especially if the company is hiring a lot of pilots. If you are at the beginning, you can be a line holder much faster, upgrade much faster, and have a much better quality of life. 2 or 3 months can make a huge difference.
