Once you get to the point in a professional pilot career where you are flying captain on an Airbus, it's not so easy to start a new profession. You wasted all of your 20's, and most of your 30's (most likely) to get here. So you you're supposed to go back to law school or medical school and start over? Not gonna happen. Would I do this again? No F-ing way.
Once you get on a seniority list, depending on your age, you are pretty much married to it. I'm 44, in the top 28%. If I leave to go to a major, what am I going to retire as? A 320 captain? It's better to stay here and fight.
I personally wouldn't advise anyone to get in to this career, and I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to come to Spirit unless you're unemployed. Hopefully one day that will change and I can be proud to work here.

I'll probably get shouted down for this but I've been at Spirit for about 7 months. It's not that bad, I've also worked at a dead end, crappy regional airline as well as several years of on-call 135. Spirit is absolutely a better job. Is it Delta? No. It is however better than a lot of other jobs. People seem to forget that up until a few years ago regionals paid garbage, and once these retention bonuses go away they once again will pay garbage. If I can't get called by a legacy, I would rather be at Spirit than a regional.
Also, don't be swayed by the negativity on these boards, it's the same dozen ****ed of guys constantly posting.

After year 1 the Frontier FO is 6,000 ahead.
After year 2 the Frontier FO is 2,000 ahead.
After year 3 the Frontier FO is 1,000 ahead.
Year 4 is where it ties up and then goes back and forth from there. They have a 75 hour guarantee and 125% pay for anything flown over 82 hours.

I spend a lot of time mentoring young pilots. It's a personal passion of mine. Two things really annoy me. The first is when someone who isn't a professional pilot yet hears from a current professional pilot about how awful the career is, and that they should never go this route. If the job is so bad, why are you still in this career field?
The second is when a bunch of pilots at an airline tell everyone considering working for that airline how horrible it is, but then remain employed at that airline. It's like you guys are purposely telling new hires to stay away to use it as a bargaining chip with the company. If it is so bad, why don't you quit? Every airline is hiring. It's clearly not that bad if you are ONLY waiting for United, American, or Delta. Why not go to Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Virgin, Allegiant, Frontier, Atlas, any regional.
Warren Buffet is famous for saying "holding a stock is the same as making the decision to buy that stock at that price." Staying at Spirit is the same as making the decision to be hired there today. If it's that bad, leave, and go anywhere else (including another regional). But clearly it's not that bad, since all of you are staying, so why do you tell all these regional pilots to not come to Spirit???
Bottom line: If you are considering Spirit, remember that it is not so bad that all these people giving you advice are still working there! It can't be that bad. Do what is right for you and your career, and don't play along to help be a bargaining chip for an airline's pilot group that you don't even work for.

And yes, if I had it to do all over again I'd have done anything other than aviation.

This last week has opened my eyes as to how much this company has leaned on the pilots to "make more go happen". We are talking about 10-15% of the entire schedule. Obove and beyond our regular schedule is how they staffed the airline and then pay half of what everyone else is paying. Don't get me started on retirement.
This has given me very little confidence in our managements ability to execute running a solid airline. Maybe they wanted to see how long they could get the discount for. All I know is that if they continue down this path it's pointless for anyone new to even think about working here until an industry contract appears or the entire management gets whitewashed

If my seniority were portable I'd go to Jetblue tomorrow. If I have to start over tell me how to get delta to call and I'll give you a seniority bump.
