Nobody has seen anything like this before..nobody knows how long it will take to get back where we were. Maybe there will be a vaccine in several months..we’re buying some time. Nothing more. I’m not advocating an amendment to the contract. I merely stated that not everyone agrees to voting down the extension..to the TEMPORARY MOU. LOA is on there..it was the only thing the company was offering. I probably have enough seniority not to be furloughed..I’m thinking about everyone else. In times past..there were other jobs available. Now there really isn’t. There are over 30 million people on unemployment right now. If you..extra vocal people against saving other people’s jobs to buy time..can explain why a TEMPORARY solution like the one we are under now won’t work..or why it’s so horrible..excellent. If all you’re going to do is attack anyone with a different opinion..not sure why I wasted my time. Maybe you’re right..maybe everyone will get furloughed anyway..if hoping those people can hold on to a percentage of their pay and their benefits for even three more months makes me..let’s see what were they all..delusional, ignorant, entitled, clueless..then ok! You win. Sleep well with your extra few hundred dollars a month. Next time it may be you on the chopping block. We don’t work at Southwest. We’re not going to get a 5 year LOA with 63% pay and be living on six figures to chill at home. We work at Mesa..with JO. It was SOMETHING. Guessing a more “generous” offer is not around the corner. This was it.
The circumstances may be different (COVID) but pretty much anyone who has been in this business for more than 10 years or so has seen this sort of thing before. 9-11, economy problems, covid, the resulting effect on the industry is the same - furloughs, downgrades, etc followed by recovery. It’s happened before, it’s happening now and it will happen again.

Understood. But if there is a date on it..and it specifically says temporary..with the expiration date..doesn’t everyone have to come back to the table at that point to decide what’s next? Can’t it buy at least some time? And then if not extended at that point reverts to the contract?

Thank you. We have. We see the result. Maybe we can all get a refund on our dues. Ha.

Maybe the MEC understands the history of airline negotiations and is looking out for your best interests.

Now that the result is out contact them again. I have and they were receptive and shared additional info that I will not post here.

I’m going to withdraw from all of this.

But, just speaking for myself I’ve had a hard time making ends meet on our contractual guarantee, to go on with a lower guarantee for another 3-6 months would be a real problem. I’m a relatively junior captain (possibly within downgrade range) and I fly with a lot of junior guys. They do a good job and I enjoy flying with them and I wouldn’t wish a furlough any any of them or their families, but these things happen. Would a reduction actually be temporary? I’d say probably. Would it buy some time? Maybe. But once you start giving things away it’s a vey slippery slope. Negotiating and penny pinching is management’s full time job - they are very good at it. In my opinion if management wants something from the pilot group, it’s usually not in our best interest. Paranoid? Maybe a little it’s tempered by experience.

Do I want to get furloughed? No! Do I want to work for less which COULD save my job and hurt the industry? NO!
If you didn’t do your homework before getting into this business that’s on you. If you didn’t prepare a plan b that’s on you....thats a lesson we all should have learned from being kids. If some of you walk through life with no plan b...that’s a really bad plan. I’ve been in and or around this business since 1998 and there is nothing that’s a “for sure deal” Nobody knows what will happen...but I do know this...everything will work itself out.

Everyone gets furloughed as an airline pilot during their career. It’s a rite of passage. Deal, move on, and tell the story one day.

Remember it takes 2 to negotiate. We tried temporary relief over here and it was shot down. Also a temporary relief sets the stage for what you’re willing to part with for concessions which become the new starting point in a BK contract negotiation. Your claims about there being no work are skewed, there’s many jobs to be had. Yea might be outside the scope of the industry for awhile, but if you’re going to cut guarantee and make less than fast food you may as well get furloughed and go make more in fast food.
